In the past, precisely identifying the location of tumors using traditional treatment planning methods was difficult. Large margins were necessary to ensure that the tumor was encompassed in its entirety. Normal tissue and organs not involved in cancer were unnecessarily treated. Side effects were proportional to the amount of normal tissue included in the field. Because focusing of the field was not possible, healthy structure tolerance prevented high doses needed for tumor eradication. Local failure was more prevalent as well as higher incidences of side effects.
